This table is a summary of state highways. I left off the interstates (I hate slab). I left off route 19 because much of it is polluted with traffic and cops. I've also left off county roads (CR-xx) as this list is long enough already and it provides a sense of discovery for the adventuresome rider. The Ratings are explained HERE and are my subjective opinion of the road. Pavement and road quality varies, so be sure to pay attention to the descriptons to find out where the good bits are.
Pavement quality is generally good to excellent. Expect some gravel in the mountains. Winters can be harsh with the most obvious sign being the right edge of the road getting beat up. Police presence is quite low in the boonies, but be sure to behave yourself in towns (many have speed traps) and on the heavily travelled tourist routes. Many of the roads are remote and don't have cell phone coverage. WV can be an unforgiving place to crash with medical help a long ways off. Enjoy the twisties, but use discretion.
Maps were created using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 software. Clicking on the JPG link will display a map of the entire road as a 1600x1200 screenshot. Zoom level varies between maps, but it's zoomed in as much as Streets and Trips will allow and still show the whole route. The EST link will download a Streets and Trips data file of the road.

Runs between Oakland, MD and Morgantown, then cuts southwest to New Martinsville (jct 2) on the Ohio river. Starting from the west, 7 runs for 32 twisty, remote miles from New Martinsville to jct 250 in Hundred (highly recommended). It continues northeast to Blacksville (jct 218) with more nice sweepers, then heads east to Morgantown. Most people avoid downtown Morgantown using I-79 and I-68. The section east of Morgantown is quite nice, but then you pass through several small towns on the way to Kingwood. Once east of Kingwood, 7 is good fun heading to Terra Alta and then on to the MD border. The road turns into MD 39 for a few miles before jct 219 in Oakland, MD.

Runs north/south from St Marys on the Ohio River to the VA border near Tazewell, but keep heading south into VA to jct 81 in Marion. Starts off mellow in St Marys, then gets nicely twisty south of 50 to jct 33/119 in Millstone. It stays interesting south of 33, then mellows as you approach Gauley Bridge (jct 60). The section from Fayettesville to Beckley, well, sucks. Too much traffic and civilization. Skip it. South of Beckley you suffer through a number of small coal towns until Mullen, then things get twisty and more remote as pass thru War, Welch and Tazewell on the way to Marion, VA. The section from War to Welch and from Tazewell to Marion are not to be missed. Road can be dirty in spots, especially the uber-twisties (15 MPH hairpins up/down the mountain) between Tazewell and Marion.

Runs north/south from jct 7 near New Martinsville (north) to jct 52 in extreme southern WV near the VA border a bit west of Bluefield. Starts interesting with new pavement near New Martinsville then mellows as you approach route 19. The section between Buckhannon and Webster Springs is especially nice. Fair bit of traffic south of Webster Springs to jct 39. Never been on it south of 39.

Runs north/south from the border of PA (PA-281) to jct 50 south of Tunnelton. The northern section from the PA border to Bruceton Mills is straight and mellow. The section between Bruceton Mills (jct 68) and Kingwood (jct 7) is excellent with nice tight sweepers on good pavement. A favorite. Nice sweepers on mostly good pavement south of Kingwood.

Runs north/south connecting Thomas (jct 219) to Harmon (jct 33). Canaan Valley is in the middle. 20 miles of nice sweepers aside from the long straight that is Canaan Valley. Lots of deer around, so keep your eyes peeled...

Runs east/west across the middle of the state. The middle section from I-79 to a bit east of Elkins is 4-lane highway. The road is excellent east of Elkins all the way into Virginia with a nice mix of switchbacks up and down the mountains with sweepers and some straights in the vallies. The section west of I-79 to the Ohio border is non-stop curves up and down the mountains on mostly good pavement (varies). Also highly recommended.

A great east/west route that cuts across south-central WV. A great ride from Warm Springs, VA (jct 220) thru Marlington (jct 219) to Richwood (near jct 20). Continues east from Richwood across 19 at Summersville and finally ending at jct 16 a bit north of Gauley Bridge. The section just west of Warm Springs was freshly paved and most excellent in 2006.

A really nice stretch of road between the Ohio River near Parkersburg (jct 50) running east to jct 33/119 a bit west of Weston. Fairly remote, scenic and twisty!

Runs east/west in the northern third of the state. A great ride with a wonderful mix of switchbacks, sweepers and scenery between the VA border (near Winchester) all the way west to Clarksburg (jct I-79). Unfortunately it turns into a 4-lane highway west of I-79 to the OH border. Beware of gravel in mountains, especially in the spring. The road also sees some truck traffic (semis and coal trucks). Be sure to stop in at Cool Springs Park/Exxon, one mile west of jct 72 for a definative WV general store.

Connects 28 to 219. Runs past the famous Cass Railroad Museum as well as Snowshoe Ski Resort (near 219). Very twisty, a bit dirty. Remote. Good fun.

Runs north/south from jct 7 near Kingwood to jct 32 south of Canaan Valley. The northern section between 7 and 50 is nice sweepers along the Cheat River. The middle section between 50 and jct 219 in Parsons is more nice sweepers in the mountains. The southern third (south of Parsons) is very twisty and remote, but also exceedingly dirty and beat up in spots. Probably fun on a GS bike though.

Runs north/south down the WV panhandle. The north end is at jct 27 (PA-844) about a mile from the PA border. It twists and winds south to Wheeling with an especially twisty section just south of West Liberty. Beware of surprise decreasing radius turns. Most people skip Wheeling by taking Peters Run Rd (look for BP on left) to jct 40, then picking up 88 again. There is a bit of civilization to ride through south of Wheeling, but the road gets fun again for several miles before hitting 250. The really good stuff is north of Wheeling. The section south of Wheeling is OK.

More of a country road with variable pavement quality that connects 250 near Bellton to route 2 at Proctor (Ohio River). The northern end and southern ends are decent, but the middle is a bit gnarly. Good fun on a dual-sport/all-roads bike.

Runs from Thomas (jct 219) east/northeast to jct 50. Mostly straight and mellow with some high alpine type meadows along the way. There are 5 miles where it joins route 42 for the run down Scherr Mtn that are not to be missed.

Runs north/south from the PA/WV border north of Morgantown all the way south to the WV/VA border (jct 52). Some nice sweepers along the way, but also lots of mellow highway and traffic since it's a major artery. Not sure what the part south of Charleston is like. The section north of I-79 to Weston is decent.

Runs from Waynesburg, PA (bit north of the border) to Blacksville (at the PA/WV border) south to jct 19 south of Farmington. A few short sections with some nice corners south of Blacksville, but mostly pretty mellow country highway.

Runs north/south from the MD/WV border near Oakland, MD to Peterstown at the WV/VA border. Some sections are just OK (near Elkins) but most is very good to excellent. It *is* a major artery, so expect some traffic.

Runs diagonally across the state from northwest
to southeast. The northern section from Moundsville to Hundred is
unrelentingly twisty with some great scenery on the ridges. Not To
Be Missed. The section east of 219 into Virginia to jct 42 (near Staunton)
is also most excellent. There is a lot of traffic near Fairmont. The
section south of Elkins (via 219) is straight and boring. |

Runs from Fairmont (jct 250) to Grafton (jct 119). Repaved in 2004(?). Nicely twisty and good fun if you're lucky enough to avoid traffic. |
