Roads are given an overall rating as well as being classified according to road type and pavement quality.

Overall Rating Description

Five stars means this road is a MUST DO; one of the best in the region

Four stars means the road is worth going out of your way for

Three stars indicates a nice enough road, typical of the bike-worthy roads in the region

Two stars indicates a below average road, usually due to fair pavement or traffic.

One star indicates a poor road that is probably best avoided due to bad pavement or traffic.


Road Type Description
Twisties
Roads with numerous "sharp corner" warning signs, many with speeds 25 MPH or slower
Sweepers
Roads with lots of turns, but lacking the "sharp corner" content of Twisties
Cruiser
Scenic two-lane roads with long straights and mellow curves
Highway
Usually four-lane roads, or heavily travelled, mostly straight, two-lane roads.

Pavement Quality Description
Excellent
Smooth surface with very few potholes, heaves or repairs
Good
A generally smooth surface with occassional bumpy bits
Fair
A generally bumpy surface, but tolerable for short distances
Poor
Rotten, dirty, abused pavement in desparate need of repaving
